February
California
Almond
Industry Position Report placed industry
shipments for themonth at 149.3million
pounds, a 6.7% decline from the 160.0
million pounds in February 2013.While
shipments to the export market declined
by18.8% to94.9millionpounds,deliveries
into thedomestic tradecontinue to register
stellar performance, reaching 54.5million
pounds, 26.1% greater than the amount
shippedoneyear ago.
Shipments on a year-to-date basis now
stand at 1,219.3 million pounds, 3.6%
above the level shipped last year against a
supply that is up a similar amount.While
the U.S. market continues to lead the
industry’s growth,up26.1% for themonth
and 13.5% year-to-date, theAsia/Pacificmarkets are down 18.4% year-to-date, driven by both
China and India, down 30.6% and 28.5%, respectively.This is offset by demand in Europe, up
19.4%,with consumption inWestern Europe up by 21.8% over the same point one year ago.
Shipments into theMiddleEast are also up from last year’s level, running 12.5% above the total
shippedyear-to-date.
Commitments of the 2013 crop supply are up by 3.7% year-to-date through February, with
relatively lightnewbookingsof 88millionpounds in thepastmonth.
The current pace of shipments and commitments indicate a potential carryout of 350million
poundsat theendof themarketingcampaign.Lookingahead into thesecondhalfof themarketing
year,we expect the domesticmarket tomoderate from its current rate of growth,withChina
and India exceeding last year’s light secondhalf performance.FromMarch through July of 2013,
China/HongKong imported31million lbs fromCaliforniaandIndia imported27millionpounds.
Both look to equalor exceed that total in the currentyear.
Whilenotperfect, theweatherexperiencedduring the recently completed2014bloomperiodwas
more than adequate,withmoderate temperatures providing excellent opportunities to pollinate
the bloom.Following the intermittent rainfall in the back half of the bloom,weather conditions
have turneddry andwarm.
